THF is produced in quantities of about 200,000 tonnes per year. [2] The most widely used method is the acid-catalyzed dehydration , similar to the dehydration of ethanol to produce ethylene. Butanediol can be obtained by carbonylation of acetylene followed by hydrogenation. DuPont has developed a method for producing by oxidation followed by catalytic hydrogenation. [3] Butanediol can also be produced by hydroformylation followed by hydrogenation. THF can also be produced by catalytic hydrogenation of f. .F can be derived from pentose sugars. However, this method is not widely used.
THF can be polymerized into chain-like polytetramethylene oxide (PTMEG) in a strong acidic environment. CAS No. [25190-06-1], also known as PTMO, which stands for "polytetramethylene oxide". Its basic use is to make elastic polyurethane fibers, such as spandex.
